Vacationers and event organizers have a lot of discretion where to spend their travel dollars. If a location is seen inhospitable, they are happy to quickly walk away and plan a trip elsewhere. Arizona recently faced the potential to lose travelers after the legislature there passed a law allowing businesses to discriminate against gays. The CEOs of major airlines and hotels quickly pressed the governor for veto, which she did. Arizona saw a large drop off in 2010 when it enacted a tough law targeting illegal immigrants that many saw as allowing racial profiling. Conventions and corporate retreats were canceled or rescheduled as a result. Finally, there was the lingering effects of a posh AIG retreat that drew strong criticism at the height of the recession and a ripple effect of companies scaling back their own retreats as a result.
